Catalogue Design

"Friends in the Arts" is an extension of the exhibition "Art Patrons," focusing on the current state of art collecting in China. Therefore, the poster and cover are designed explicitly in Chinese red, symbolizing both the expansion and extension of the original exhibition and the symbolic representation of China's contemporary art ecosystem. The precise layout includes the comprehensive listing of all collector names, emphasizing and enlarging the proportion of the collectors' identities. Additionally, the spherical visual elements have been replaced with an L-shaped border, achieving a balance and shift in visual focus. The final present is a meticulously designed cover with harmonious spacing, lineup, and visual balance.

The catalogue unfolds in the sequence of exhibition space, table of contents, preface, selected articles, artwork details, artwork list, and tank venue introduction, systematically guiding the audience to comprehend the full scope of the exhibition.

On the contents page, the names of collectors and artists are paired together, indirectly presenting the subtle relationships between collectors and artists. Following this, two curatorial articles and one article by a contemporary art research scholar are included, reflecting the academic efforts and contributions of "Friends in the Arts." The main content pages' concise and clear layout neatly presents all information with a well-structured design. This allows readers to dig into each collector and artwork easily. The catalog includes a detailed list of artworks, systematically presenting information on all pieces. The back cover continues the exhibition's central visual theme of Chinese red color, enhancing the overall visual tension of the catalogue and making it pop out of the shelf.

Catalogue Production

In terms of production, the catalogue mainly focuses on details, employing hot stamping techniques for essential information to highlight the exhibition's key content. The inner pages are crafted using heavier-weight matte paper, enhancing the overall texture and allowing readers to experience the quality of the catalogue through its tactile feel.

Designer

TANK Shanghai invited the expertise of renowned German designer Ingo Maak to design the layout of the catalogue. Ingo's skillful technique adds an artistic sense to the catalogue, and his design aims to bring each page to life.

Regarding the "Friends in the Arts" exhibition, Ingo commented: "I find it charming that no one positions themselves above collectors or artworks but rather considers themselves equal to them as ordinary individuals."
