LU SISI: "SUNSET DRUM SUNRISE BELL·IV Quadrate"

Duration: July 4, 2025 - July 7, 2025

Address: TANK Shanghai, 2380 Longteng Ave

"SUNSET DRUM SUNRISE BELL: IV Quadrate" began in 2020, born from a single idea—a sonic documentary of self-cultivation.

In this exhibition, LU SISI’s creative practice has long been shaped by elements of modern civilization: industry, digital art, and electronic music. In the latest chapter of "SUNSET DRUM SUNRISE BELL", titled "IV Quadrate", LU SISI returned to the most fundamental way of gathering inspiration: traveling to factories and to deserted ancient temples, using my camera and recording equipment to engage with these spaces, attuning to the energy of religious iconography. The remnants of the old electronics industry, abandoned components, obsolete blueprints, the mechanical rhythms of automated production, converge with the aesthetics, sounds, and ritual instruments of Buddhism and Daoism. Sound gives shape to form; brushstrokes summon melody. LU SISI seek to explore a "figurative abstraction rooted in Chinese tradition" —where collisions of media activate sensory instinct and create an immersive field of experience.

Rather than a finished work, this project is better understood as a personal baptism or an introspective journey articulated through the act of making.

This is a quiet offering.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

LU SISI is a multimedia artist born in Hulunbeier, Inner Mongolia, China. He studied and lived in the UK for 15 years and now lives and works in Shanghai and London. His work is often presented in various forms, including live performance, installation, film, painting, music, sound, and many others. Lu explores the audiovisual as an emotionally constructed phenomenon, shaping and expressing sound, vision, time, and space in a new digital way to demonstrate the connection between artistic sensation and human perception.

Lu graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in 2011, won the Gold Medal in the Professional category at the 54th New York Festival, is the only Chinese artist to have received a Sky Arts scholarship from the Sky Academy, and was one of the representatives to meet King Charles and Queen Camilla of Cornwall in 2014.
